Hamnafield Cardigan

Hamnafield Cardigan

Hamnafield cardiganHamnafield is a seamless cardigan with Fair Isle yoke and instructions are given for ten sizes. Waist shaping is achieved through small sections of cabling which also gives textured areas. The buttonhole band has a scalloped edge.waist area of Hamnafield cardigan

The lower body is knitted in one piece, and the sleeves are knitted in the round. The yoke is knitted from stitches from the front and back of the body and the tops of the sleeves.

In the Fair Isle yoke only two colours are used in each round.Hamnafield yoke

Detailed instructions are given for all steps needed to knit this cardigan.

The cardigan was knitted in wool from Foula sheep, and I was knitting one of the sleeves when I took a trip to Foula on a beautiful summer day.

Hjorki unisex cardigan

Hjorki unisex cardigan

Unisex Fair Isle zipped cardigan with hood, in three sizes. One of the beauties of using Shetland Supreme yarn is that blocking can increase either the width or length. Using bigger knitting needles would also increase the size.

Hjorki cardigan front viewThe cardigan has two front pockets (optional) and a shaped hood and is knitted in undyed Shetland Supreme Jumper weight yarn. The cardigan fastens with an open ended zip and there is one button at the neck (optional).

Most of the cardigan, including the hood, is knitted in the round, and there are no seams. The construction is traditional, with straight sides and the sleeves are knitted from the top down.

The hood is knitted first, washed and blocked; this gives the knitter the chance to become familiar with the colour sequence, to ensure the tension is correct and to practice all the techniques required to finish the whole garment. Only two colours are used in each round.

The instructions are written and charted, with notes and additional photos showing detail to help the knitter, and are arranged to minimise printing.

Shetland Star cardigan

Shetland Star cardigan

This pattern supplements “The Fine Art of Fair Isle with Shetland’s Hazel Tindall”, which is available as a download or DVD.

Fair Isle cardigan with straight sides and an optional small pocket – or two. Apart from the ribs, the cardigan is knitted in the round. Instead of the more usual jumper weight yarn, this pattern uses double knitting yarn to make it easier to see when filmed.

Using recommended yarn and 4.00mm needles a 10 cm square is 27sts x 25 rows over Fair Isle pattern.

In the film the cardigan is knitted following Shetland tradition using double pointed needles with a knitting belt and a raepin string. Circular knitting needles can be used.

Each step is demonstrated in the DVD/download and skills shown can easily be used with other knitting projects.

It uses either Jamieson of Shetland's Spindrift or Jamieson & Smith's 2ply Jumper weight yarn.

This is a slouch hat so, as long as the rib is a comfortable fit, the Fair Isle tension is not crucial.
