Jumper boards
January 5, 2014Shetlanders 'dress' or 'board' knitting once it's finished but outside of Shetland the word 'block' is more commonly used. To dress jumpers (sweaters), jumper boards have been used in Shetland for many years. My mother, who was a child in the 1920s, said there always seemed to be a ju...
The last days of 2013
December 31, 20132013 is nearly over and my resolution for 2014 is to blog again. Over the past months the motivation to write blogs vanished. I have however thought about it and taken a lot of photos which will be shared here over time. I'm starting with some photos of Shetland's winter landscape which is surp...
Skeld show: flowers, fruit and vegetables
August 29, 2013It is always interesting, and inspiring, to see what people grow in Shetland. I recently went to Skeld to see the entries for their recent competition. Unfortunately the smell could not be captured to share with you but I did get a few photos. One section was for floral arrangements inspired by...
SWRI show
August 27, 2013Scottish Women's Rural Institute's Shetland Federation recently held their annual show in the Town Hall, Lerwick. I was a little late in getting there so had time for just a very quick look round before the prize giving began. There was a huge range of items on display - tatting, crochet, patchwork,...
Shetland in summer

Visitors to Shetland
July 25, 2013It is always fascinating to meet people who have travelled to Shetland mostly because they have a passion for knitting and textile related crafts. So far this year I have enjoyed meeting some of these enthusiasts. First I met a group of 24 from Japan when I demonstrated at Shetland Te...
Michaelswood
July 24, 2013Michaelswood in Aith is one of my favourite places to take a walk. The transition from working croft to woodland has taken over 15 years, and a great deal of hard work by my neighbours, Ray, Betty and Alan Ferrie. This woodland is dedicated to their son/brother, Michael. Covering about 12 acres...
Trevor Tindall
July 8, 2013My husband died on 26 June, aged just 64. I am pleased I found the strength to read the eulogy at his funeral. After discussing with the family I decided to share it on my blog, especially as he met many people in the knitting world. I am grateful for the support of family and cl...
Pictures in the Burn o Lunklet
May 30, 2013It's always good to take the time to stop and look at beauty near home. A visitor is a good excuse to go to favourite places and today we enjoyed a short walk and spent a while watching the pictures nature created for us we looked down at the Burn o Lunklet. These reminded m...
Lerwick Flower Park
May 29, 2013One of the most pleasant places to visit in Lerwick, at just about any time of year, is "Da Flooer Park". Almost the first thing I noticed inside the main park gates was the newly planted bedding display. After a moment I remembered that the correct name for this area is the King George V Park ...
