Haps at Ollaberry - 2

With over 80 haps on display it was impossible to photograph every one. Nor was it possible to make a note of the stories behind all the haps but I made a point of recording these two.

Betty Ratter knitted the white hap for Children in Need's 1994 appeal. The winning bidder was Helen Robertson. She then passed it on to Betty's grand-daughter, Lizzie, when her first baby was born in 2010. Lizzie works in Jamieson's shop in Lerwick; after seeing her grandmothers handspun and handknitted shawls I understand Lizzie's enjoyment of her job.

The heavier, brightly coloured hap, is lovely too but no-one knew who had knitted it.

Shetland

Shetland is the most northerly group of Scottish islands. Apart from mainland Scotland, the other near neighbours are Norway to the east and the Faroe Islands to the north west.
